Welcome to the grammar section.
Here you will find games and activities that will help your child’s grammar skills.
Nouns
Nouns are the easiest to tackle and this is usually where I start off learning grammar.
Differentiating between proper nouns and common nouns is a first step here. Once that is done, it is quite easy to bring out the properties of a common noun through play.
This can be done at various levels of course. A young child can easily understand that ‘flower’ and ‘house’ are nouns as they are very concrete things that we can see and touch.
Older children will understand that ‘predicament’ is also a noun even though it cannot be touched.
Verbs
The next step is learning about verbs and their key position in a sentence.
They will start to recognize verbs and then little by little will learn to conjugate them as well as use them to the correct tense to express what they want to say.
I quite like MacMillan dictionary’s verb wheel here, once children are familiar with various tenses, to help them revise the basics.
