Welcome to the numeracy section.
Here you will find games and activities that will help your child’s numeracy skills.
Pre-school maths skills
Prior to starting school, your child will already have acquired numerous maths skills.
They will most probably know how to count up to ten (sometimes more) and will be able to compare them to know which is more. They will be able to recognize the written numbers and count a small amount of objects.
Understanding whole number relationship
As they grow, children are going to be able to better understand numbers and the relationship they have to each other.
They will be able to be more accurate in their comparisons and estimations.
As time goes by they will be able to count up to the hundreds, and then up to the thousands and they will be able to work with bigger and bigger numbers.
Place value
As time goes by, they will also develop an understanding that each digit in a number has a place value.
It is important for them not only to be able to recognize and categorize which number is a unit, ten or hundred, but also to understand why it is so.
Here are some online games that will help your child grasp the concept of place value. Some are really simple and will help your child familiarize with the concept. Some require a little more thinking. They are ranked in order of difficulty. As they play, don’t offer any support and let them figure things out for themselves, even if they use counting at first. The more they can figure it out alone, without your explanations, the more confident they will become, even if they are not using the best strategies in the beginning.
